A Bibliographic Note on this Bibliography  To the best of my knowledge, this is a (near-) comprehensive bibliography of C. West Churchman's publications. It originated in a list of selected publications that I first published in 1999, as an appendix to my Churchman biography in the "Luminaries" section of the web site of the International Society for the Systems Sciences (ISSS). The original selection is still available at the following URL:
http://projects.isss.org/doku.php?id=c_west_churchman

In 2002, I expanded the list to a bibliography of all of Churchman publications known to me at the time and made it available as a separate publication in the present site (publication date: 29 Nov 2002). I have continuously updated it since, correcting errors and omissions as I became aware of them. Last major revisions date of 10 April 2006 and 27 March 2009, although I have kept updating the bibliography since and will continue to do so. Any help in this will be welcome; please use the email link given in the right hand column here or in the "Contact" page of this web site. Thank you.

KEY WORDS: C.W. Churchman – bibliography; operations research; management science; philosophy of science; social systems design; systems approach; systems thinking.

About the Author

Werner Ulrich was born in 1948 in Bern, Switzerland. He obtained doctorates in Economics and Social Science (Dr.rer.pol., 1975) from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, and in Philosophy of Social Systems Design (Ph.D., 1980) from the University of California at Berkeley. At Berkeley he studied and worked for five years with C. West Churchman. He has since become known as a pioneer of critical systems thinking (CST), by which he understands the use of systemic thinking in the service of reflective practice and research. He has contributed to this aim mainly through his work on critical systems heuristics (CSH) and its methodological core principle of boundary critique, along with his current work on a "philosophy for professionals" based on practical philosophy and on what he calls critical pragmatism. This work has been influential and is increasingly recognized for its relevance in applied disciplines such as operational research, policy analysis, management consultancy, professional and business ethics, social planning, evaluation research, environmental planning and management, information systems design, and others.

Ulrich has many years of experience as chief evaluator of public health and social welfare in the Canton of Bern and as professor of social planning, program evaluation, poverty research, and critical systems thinking in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. He has also been a visiting professor for critical systems thinking at the Centre for Systems Studies of the University of Hull, Hull, UK; at the Centre for Systems Research of the Lincoln School of Management of the University of Lincoln, Lincoln, UK; at the Department of Management of Canterbury University in Christchurch, New Zealand (Erskine Science Prestige Fellowship); and in the Faculty of Mathematics, Computing and Technology (Centre for Complexity and Change) of The Open University, Milton Keynes, UK.

Among more than 200 publications, his major book is Critical Heuristics of Social Planning: A New Approach to Practical Philosophy (Haupt, Bern, 1983, Wiley paperback reprint edition, New York, 1994). His current research program "CST for Professionals and Citizens" explores the ways critical systems thinking can contribute to responsible professional practice and to preparing citizens for their role in a living civil society.

A Tribute to C. West Churchman (Introductory Page)

C. West Churchman, my former teacher and mentor at the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the outstanding pioneers of the "systems approach." Find some material about him here, including an extensive bibliography and three tribute articles dedicated to West, in which I tried to appreciate the importance that his thinking (and my experience of working with him during five years) had for my work on critical systems heuristics.
